Ajoomma is the newest film from director He Shuming and it’s the latest International Feature submission for Singapore. The film is about a mother who’s lost her husband and lives alone with her son in an apartment. As her son is preoccupied with work and other activities, Lin Bee Hwa spends most of her days dancing with a group of friends, watching tv, and maintaining her apartment.
Recently, Lin Bee Hwa has become obsessed with Korean soap operas, so she’s booked a trip to Busan with her son. They plan to spend five days together with a tour group called Secrets of the Stars to go to all the spots where the tv show is filmed. She is super excited to spend time with her son and to go on vacation together. Unfortunately, a few days before the trip, Sam cancels on her saying that he needs to go to Santa Monica for a job interview. As the tour is non-refundable Lin Bee Hwa decides to take the trip alone.
As she arrives in South Korea, she realizes that she’s the only person from Singapore in the tour group, as everyone else is from China. She has difficulties making friends, or socializing with anyone. During a pit stop, Lin Bee Hwa gets separated from the rest of the group and as she breaks her phone in the process she’s all of a sudden alone, lost, and unsure what to do next.
Her adventure is about to begin.
Ajoomma is a heartwarming, funny, extremely charming film about motherhood, loneliness, rediscovering oneself and learning to be more independent by trying new things. Hong Huifang gives a wonderful performance as a woman and mother having a second shot at life to do things differently. She will have more confidence and live more boldly. She will change for herself. She will start all over again from the beginning.
